Topic:

The new three-dimensional (3D) technologies, and the application of modern mapping, provide evidence of rapid cartographic development. Through research modern cartographic techniques supply the Digital Earth (DE) approach to spatial modelling with the most realistic and understandable visualization of the real word.

This report describes a complex technology that tracks the creation of several three-dimensional (3D) mapping applications based on a 3D model. Three types of application will be considered: 3D map printing, virtual flight (animation map) and a 3D map with an interactive web application. Each application requires the use of specific features of the 3D model according to its type and method of creation. These features depend on the purpose, and the user, of the map; on the method of visualization and publication; on the software to be used for the creation of the different 3D maps; and on the technical requirements and hardware capacities of the computers. The proposed technology will support the Digital Earth ideas and the realization of visualization applications in regards to three aspects: paper publishing on the basis of the perspective view of a 3D map; virtual Internet presentation with user friendly tools and a 3D mapping for different users purposes, for example, virtual animated mapping.

The proposed technology is called the “3D Multifunctional Cartographic Model”. Why is this technology needed? One of the most expensive steps in 3D mapping is gathering the information sources and data. Once the basic 3D model of the real world is created it can be used for different purposes, for different users and for different applications.

The proposed applications are based on one and the same 3D model. It is designed and constructed by the software for 3D modelling. For this aim the processed data base was used. When the real object is designed some cartographic rules are adhered to (e.g. generalization, symbolization, legend design, etc.). All these cartographic characteristics make the 3D model a new modern cartographic product for tourist needs.
